CFLs

In the September issue of Fast Company (page 74) there is an article that describes quite nicely the amazing properties of CFLs - Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs. It's tough for me to start to think of Wal-Mart as a company that is going to be watching out for the environment and our pocketbook but I'm a cheerleader of any initiative such as what we are about to see in the lightbulb aisle at Wal-Mart. I hope it's a huge success!

If may make you feel better (or maybe worse) if you think about Wal-Mart's move towards environmentalism as a reflection of market conditions (e.g. increasing cost of energy, increasing demand from consumers for "make me feel good about myself" products that increasing wealth affords, decreasing trust in governments to solve problems leading to increased pressure/focus on companies) along with Wal-Mart's strongest capabilities (execution that can do stuff bigger and cheaper than competitors).

That is, they may care about the environment, but if they can couple it with a new growth strategy that may help bolster profits and their public image they will go after it in true Wal-Mart fashion -- to WIN! In this case the end result may have many different reasons for becoming results --> and can be appreciated by many different groups: consumers, employees (working for a "better" wal-mart), stockholders (increased wealth), and potentially mother earth. Methinks this is why free-markets can bring about good results, and may be better at self-policing that relying on governments.
